Overview: SilverHorn Golf Club is an 18-hole San Antonio course in the city’s north-central corridor, close enough to the airport and major roads to be a practical round for a visitor. Randy Heckenkemper designed the par-72 layout around live oaks, brush, native Texas vegetation and changing ground. The longest published tee measures 6,922 yards, with shorter options intended to keep the course playable without removing its strategic character. The setting is more secluded than the address suggests. Fairways move through open land and tree-lined corridors, while the mix of natural scrub and moderate water creates a round that rewards a controlled line rather than a constant attempt to overpower the course.
History: Current course records place the opening in 1997 and credit Heckenkemper, with PGA Tour players Willie Wood and Scott Verplank consulting on the San Antonio project. The club continues to operate as a daily-fee style facility with a full range and practice programme. That history matters because SilverHorn was conceived as a course that could challenge strong players while remaining enjoyable for ordinary rounds, not as a championship layout that depends on one narrow level of ability.
Did You Know? The course’s natural palette includes live oaks, brush and occasional cactus, an unusually specific combination for a city course. Its four tee choices were part of the original design idea, allowing the same corridors to play as a demanding test or a more forgiving day out. SilverHorn’s character comes from that balance: the landscape looks quiet, but the preferred angle into many greens changes sharply when the drive finishes on the wrong side of the fairway.
