Overview: Sigona Golf Club is an 18-hole parkland course in Kikuyu, on a high, hilly site near Kenya's Great Rift Valley. The course was shaped from a former wattle plantation and is characterised by tree-lined fairways, elevated tees, altitude changes and sloping ground. Tom Simpson is credited with the design, and the current championship tees measure about 6,890 yards at par 72.
History: Sigona began in 1938 as a nine-hole course created by English plantation owner Jack Berkley-Mathews. Tom Simpson later revised the layout, and the course was expanded to 18 holes in the 1970s; that work included bunkering and shortened holes that reduced the par from 74 to 72. The club remains one of the established golf venues outside Nairobi.
Did You Know? The original nine was routed around an elephant watering hole, which explains the elephant on the club logo. On the present layout, the 465-yard seventh is a sharply doglegged par four and is listed as stroke index one by Top100 Golf Courses.
