Overview: Sherwood Park Golf Club is set about seven kilometres west of Whangarei, below the volcanic cone of Maunu Mountain. The course uses native trees, stone walls, grassland and irrigated playing surfaces to create a relaxed Northland round. It is a practical visitor course rather than a resort complex, but the rural setting and harbour views from the clubhouse give the property more atmosphere than its short drive from town might suggest.
History: The original Sherwood Rise club at Onerahi began with nine holes on a small site. As membership grew and the ground proved unsuitable, members bought 44 hectares at Maunu in 1967 and created Sherwood Park Golf Club. The old 1928 farmhouse became the first clubhouse, while later volunteer work and investment developed the course and present facilities. The club’s history is therefore a story of relocation, land improvement and community effort.
Did You Know? The course name remembers the club’s birthplace at Sherwood Rise even though the current fairways lie below Maunu Mountain. The 1928 farmhouse still forms part of the club’s story, linking the modern golf venue to the rural property that made the move possible.
