Overview: The World Cup Course is the founding championship routing at Mission Hills Shenzhen. Jack Nicklaus designed the par-72 course, which current course references list at 7,249 yards from the back tees. Its broad tournament corridors, water hazards, flat-bottomed bunkers and spectator mounding were planned for high-level competition, yet the layout still has the natural hills and vegetation that distinguish Mission Hills from a stadium built on an empty grid.
History: The course was completed in 1994 and hosted the 41st World Cup of Golf in 1995, China's first international golf tournament of that kind. Mission Hills says it was the first course in China accredited by the US PGA for major professional competitions. That history made the routing a landmark for golf in the country and gave the course its enduring World Cup name.
Did You Know? The tournament history is part of the architecture. The course was completed as a venue capable of hosting major competition, not merely named after an event held there later. Mission Hills still describes the route as a long tournament course with 87 bunkers, water hazards and grass mounds for spectators.
