Overview: Shelter Harbor Golf Club occupies roughly 400 acres in Charlestown and Westerly, where a modern private course is woven into a landscape of ponds, woodland, exposed ground and substantial natural contours. Michael Hurdzan and Dana Fry were asked to make the golf as strong as possible while keeping the environmental footprint small. The result is a strategic parkland layout with broad sandy areas, changing elevations and a strong sense of separation from the developed coast. Its character comes from the land rather than from ornamental construction: the routing moves through a protected setting and repeatedly asks golfers to read angles, ground movement and wind.
History: The club grew from a conservation decision. The founders acquired land from Narragansett Electric Company, which had originally considered a nuclear power plant on the tract. They and allied conservation groups instead assembled adjacent parcels and granted a permanent green conservation easement through the Weekapaug Foundation before transferring the property to the club. A nationwide search led to Hurdzan/Fry Environmental Golf Design, whose brief was to create a high-quality course without residential development around it. That origin explains why the course is both a serious piece of modern architecture and part of a larger watershed-preservation effort.
Did You Know? Shelter Harbor is spread across land associated with the Quonochontaug and Winnapaug pond watershed, and the founders’ conservation work protected more than the immediate fairways. There is no residential real-estate development on the golf property, an unusual quality for a contemporary private course in southern Rhode Island. The site’s earlier industrial proposal and its later conservation purpose are central to the club’s identity, making the landscape itself one of the most important chapters in the course story.
