Overview: Sharjah Wanderers Golf Club was a historic institution in the UAE, representing the traditional "desert golf" roots of the region. Founded in 1979 and moving to its final site in 1990, the course was a unique hybrid featuring grass fairways and "browns"—greens made of compacted sand and oil. While the club ceased golf operations in 2020, it remains a celebrated part of the country's sporting heritage, offering a glimpse into how the game was played in the Emirates before the advent of massive irrigation and luxury grass resorts.
Did You Know? Playing at Sharjah Wanderers required a unique set of skills; golfers typically carried a small piece of artificial grass (a mat) to play their shots from the fairways to preserve the ground. The "browns" were meticulously swept by hand to provide a smooth putting surface, creating a distinct and tactical style of golf that many early expatriates and locals fondly remember as the "authentic" desert game.
