Overview: Schuss Mountain is the long, terrain-driven course in Shanty Creek’s Summit Village group. The current resort information lists 7,013 yards from the blue tees and describes a front nine that bends through pine forest before the back nine climbs and drops across the rolling hills of Antrim County. That change in setting gives the course a two-part rhythm: the opening holes favour careful lines among the trees, while the return brings more elevation and broader movement across the land. Water and wetlands add definition without overwhelming the woodland character.
History: The course is associated with Warner Bowen and is estimated by the resort to date from 1972, when the Schuss Mountain area was becoming part of the wider Shanty Creek development. Its current routing still reflects the contrast between the flatter pine-covered front and the hillier back, rather than smoothing the property into one uniform resort landscape. Together with Summit, Schuss helped establish the original golf identity around Summit Village before later courses expanded the resort toward Cedar River and Lake Bellaire.
Did You Know? Schuss Mountain plays like two different nine-hole courses. The official description makes the transition explicit: the front stays among pine forest, while the back rises and falls across Antrim County’s rolling ground.
