Overview: Shadow Mountain Golf Club is a historic 18-hole course in Palm Desert, where Gene Sarazen’s compact design sits against the Santa Rosa Mountains. The operator lists par 70 and 5,375 yards, with tight fairways and small greens that reward thoughtful club selection more than brute force. The course is shorter than many Coachella Valley resort layouts, but its angles, wind and demanding targets give the round a sharper edge than the yardage suggests.
History: Shadow Mountain was the first golf course developed in Palm Desert. The course was incorporated in 1958 as part of Cliff Henderson’s early vision for the community, and Sarazen’s design helped establish golf as a central part of the new desert destination. In 2010 the City of Palm Desert designated Shadow Mountain a historic landmark, recognising its place in the city’s development.
Did You Know? Sarazen was not only a major champion but also one of the very few players to complete the professional Grand Slam. Shadow Mountain reflects his belief that a short course need not be easy: the official history quotes his view that strategy and thought could offset a lack of length. The property now also includes an 18-hole putting course, a separate experience from the main routing.
