Overview: Seven Oaks is Colgate University’s public Robert Trent Jones Sr. course in Hamilton, New York. The par-72 layout sits in the rolling Chenango Valley and uses water, tree-lined holes, broad teeing areas, and expansive greens. Its collegiate setting gives the course a traditional parkland rhythm with enough scale for championship play.
History: Colgate’s first nine-hole golf course was laid out in 1917-18 on the hill behind campus. Jones began planning the present course in 1934, but the Depression and World War II delayed construction. The first nine of the current course was dedicated in 1958, and holes 10 through 18 entered play in 1965.
Did You Know? Gene Sarazen helped shape the early vision for the new Colgate course, which he and Jones imagined as an “Augusta of the North.” Jones ultimately drew thirteen different course concepts as the university acquired land and refined the plan.
