Overview: Whistling Thorn is an 18-hole par-three course at Serengeti Estates near Kempton Park, designed for a complete round in less time than a conventional championship layout. Dino De Abreu’s routing uses large greens, shaped bunkers, wetlands, and an assortment of short-game angles rather than simply shrinking a full-length course. The official estate information lists 3,268 metres from the professional tees, while the individual holes range from short scoring opportunities to demanding long par threes that require a committed flight.
History: Serengeti Estates opened with a 27-hole Nicklaus Design complex in 2009. In 2018, owner David Nagle asked De Abreu to transform nine of those holes into an 18-hole par-three course. That conversion created the present Whistling Thorn routing and explains why the course has a distinctly modern identity within the larger estate, with its own rhythm and purpose rather than a shortened version of the main layouts.
Did You Know? The course was conceived with cricket in mind as well as golf. De Abreu’s brief was to create a full round that could fit into a shorter window, and nine holes interact with water. The 18th, called Wee Laddie, finishes with an island green, giving the compact course a memorable final examination without needing a long par five.
