Overview: Selborne Country Club The course carries 18 holes and a par of 72 course in the Umdoni valley near Pennington, where subtropical vegetation, rolling ground and the South Coast climate create a lush parkland setting. From the yellow tees it measures about 5,925 metres, but the course’s challenge comes from its changing angles and short strategic holes rather than excessive length. The layout is playable, scenic and full of small decisions around the greens.
History: Selborne was established in 1987 as South Africa’s first residential golf estate, based on the vision of cattle farmer and golfer Denis Barker. Barker is credited with designing the course, which became the centre of a wider hotel, spa and estate development. Its history is therefore part of the South Coast’s evolution into a golf-and-holiday destination, while the original valley setting remains central to the experience.
Did You Know? The 18th measures only about 267 metres from the back tee, one of the shortest finishing holes among ranked South African courses. Its length does not make it automatic: the green and approach still demand a decision about how aggressively to attack the final hole.
