Overview: Sapporo Bay Golf Club occupies the flat ground around the Ishikari River mouth, where the landscape gives the course a distinctly links-like feel. The current official guide says Pete Dye praised the terrain for its resemblance to the flat natural settings associated with famous Scottish courses. The club profile records 18 holes, par 72 and 7,018 yards, while the hole tables show a balanced two-loop layout with broad landing areas, bunkers, ponds and greens whose contours matter. It is a strategic wind-and-ground course on the edge of the Sapporo area.
History: The club opened in June 1995 and remains a member-oriented operation under Sapporo Bay Development. Its identity has been consistent enough to be described through the original design idea: use the estuary’s flat land and natural hazards to create a course with links influences, rather than manufacture dramatic elevation changes. The current official company page also states that play is basically arranged through a member introduction, an important part of the course’s operating history and visitor expectation.
Did You Know? The official guide calls the 18th a signature closing hole because it has produced tournament drama. It is a shortish par five by championship standards, but a bunker guarding the right side from around 100 yards out can turn an apparently easy finish into a careful three-shot hole. That is very much a Pete Dye-style lesson: the scorecard distance is only one part of the decision.
