Overview: São Paulo Golf Club is an urban parkland course in Santo Amaro, where mature trees and established fairways create a calm contrast with the scale of Brazil’s largest city. The layout is associated with a traditional, tree-lined style that places a premium on placement and controlled approaches rather than simply chasing distance. Its long history is visible in the settled character of the property, the established club grounds and the way the course functions as a green enclave inside the metropolitan landscape.
History: The club began as São Paulo Country Club in 1901, then moved through Jabaquara before settling on its present Santo Amaro property in 1915. Stanley Thompson carried out the major redesign between 1932 and 1935 with José Maria Gonzalez, a substantial stage in the course’s development that included replacing the earlier sand greens with grass. The club’s current identity therefore combines an early Brazilian golf foundation with a documented Golden Age design intervention.
Did You Know? The course’s address can make its character easy to underestimate. Inside the city, the established tree canopy and long-settled grounds create the impression of a much older rural landscape. That contrast, between metropolitan São Paulo outside the gates and a deliberately quiet golf setting within them, is one of the club’s most distinctive qualities.
