Overview: San Roque’s New Course is a par-72 layout of 18 holes created by Perry Dye with Seve Ballesteros. Set near the Sierra Bermeja foothills in Cádiz, it offers a different visual and strategic personality from the club’s older course. The New Course has wider fairways and five tee positions on each hole, but its undulating ground, strategically placed hazards and quick greens still demand careful planning. Views toward the Mediterranean, the Guadalquitón River and the surrounding countryside give the course a strong sense of place.
History: The New Course opened in 2003 as an additional 18 holes for San Roque, complementing the Old Course rather than replacing it. The design brief brought together Perry Dye’s American architectural influence and Ballesteros’s knowledge of competitive golf. Its early tournament history arrived quickly: the course hosted the Spanish Open in 2006, while the Old Course hosted the championship in 2005. That shared history helps explain why the two layouts are often discussed as a pair, even though their design languages are deliberately different.
Did You Know? The New Course was conceived as a contrast to the tighter Old Course. Its fairways are wider and each hole offers five tee positions, giving the routing more flexibility for different standards of play. The 2006 Spanish Open also made it the first of San Roque’s two courses to host that championship after the Old Course’s 2005 edition, creating a rare back-to-back chapter in the club’s tournament history.
