Overview: San Lameer Country Club is a coastal parkland course on KwaZulu-Natal’s South Coast, threaded through wetlands, indigenous forest and open glades near the Indian Ocean. Peter Matkovich and Dale Hayes shaped an 18-hole layout that changes character from shaded corridors to exposed, water-influenced holes. The setting is the main architectural asset: vegetation, wet ground and coastal light decide how much of each target can safely be seen.
History: The course was developed as part of the San Lameer resort, where golf sits alongside the protected landscape rather than replacing it. Later course work has focused on maintaining the playing surfaces and the relationship between the fairways, forest and wetlands. That balance gives the club a resort identity without turning the natural areas into mere decoration.
Did You Know? San Lameer’s wetlands are an active part of its ecology, not just hazards drawn on a scorecard. The course is known for birdlife and water-dependent vegetation, so a round can shift quickly from a forest-framed hole to a more open wetland view.
