Overview: Herdade dos Salgados Golfe occupies low-lying ground beside the Salgados Lagoon near Albufeira, giving the par-72 course an open, links-influenced character. Pedro Vasconcelos’s routing is flat but not simple: lakes, channels, marshy edges, and coastal wind repeatedly change the safest line. The absence of heavy tree cover leaves the course exposed, and the relationship between fairways and wetland creates a round in which distance control and patience are more useful than brute force.
History: The course opened in 1994 and was developed around the lagoon rather than on a heavily shaped inland site. Records credit Pedro Vasconcelos, with some later descriptions also noting Robert Muir Graves in connection with design or subsequent work. A 2012 renovation changed water features, including a new island around the twelfth, so the present routing includes both the original wetland concept and later adjustments.
Did You Know? Salgados sits beside a lagoon important for birdlife, and the water hazards are part of that wider ecological setting. The wetland is not merely scenery behind the holes. It shapes the sightlines, openness, and the way wind reaches the player. Salgados is a course whose architecture is closely tied to the edge between land and lagoon.
