Overview: The Sakabula scorecard is par 73, spread across 18 parkland holes at a country estate near Howick and Merrivale. The layout runs through rolling KwaZulu-Natal ground with indigenous vegetation, water, and a clear separation between its two nines. It is not a flat municipal course: elevation changes, the uphill par five, and the relationship between fairway position and the green complexes give the round a more adventurous shape while keeping the golf playable for a broad range of handicaps.
History: The course grew from the consolidation of twelve farms in 1995, with Gerrie de Jong responsible for bringing the land together into a coherent golf setting. The course and clubhouse opened in 1997. That development history matters because Sakabula’s character is inseparable from the scale of the land, its views towards the Drakensberg, and the way several formerly separate properties were joined into one routing.
Did You Know? The paperbark thorn beside the 14th green is one of Sakabula’s recognisable natural features. The course also includes a 500-metre uphill par five and a 10th tee associated with a robotic maintenance system, details that show how the club mixes a traditional landscape with practical modern course management.
