Overview: Saare Golf Club is an 18-hole championship course on Saaremaa, located within walking distance of Kuressaare’s castle, coast and spa district. Finnish architect Lassi Pekka Tilander designed the course as a full-size tournament layout, with gently rolling fairways, water, shaped ground and a maritime landscape that changes with the wind. The club’s official page lists par 72 and a back-tee length of 6,310 metres, approximately 6,907 yards, matching the directory record. The course is built to USGA standards and the island setting gives the round a clear coastal identity without relying on a narrow seaside strip.
History: Saare Golf was fully opened in August 2008 after a project that brought a championship course close to the centre of Kuressaare. The intention was to create an international-standard course that could support tournament golf while fitting naturally into Saaremaa’s landscape. The design and construction process used USGA specifications for the golf facilities, and the finished course became part of a broader island destination that combines golf with historic sights, beaches and spa accommodation. Its location is unusual for a full-size course because a golfer can reach the old town and the resort district on foot after a round.
Did You Know? Saaremaa’s maritime climate helps extend the playing season compared with much of mainland Estonia. The course’s coastal exposure also makes wind a recurring architectural element, changing the apparent width of fairways and the strength of approaches. That combination of mild island weather and moving air is part of what makes Saare Golf play like a course shaped by its island rather than simply placed on it.
