Overview: Rye Golf Club is a city-owned course in Rye, New York, overlooking Long Island Sound from the historic Whitby Castle property. The par-71 routing is compact, with tree-lined corridors, old green sites, and water views making placement more important than raw length. Its municipal ownership gives the course an unusual public role in Westchester golf.
History: Rye Country Club was organized in 1921, and Devereux Emmet designed the 18-hole course for the property. The City of Rye purchased the 127-acre site in 1965 and operates the facility today. Whitby Castle, built in 1852 from stones associated with Whitby Abbey, remains the course’s most visible historic landmark.
Did You Know? Whitby Castle stands behind the finishing eighteenth green and was designed by Alexander Jackson Davis. The Gothic Revival building gives a public municipal course a setting more commonly associated with an old private estate.
