Overview: The Legislator at Capitol Hill is a public Robert Trent Jones Sr. course that moves through pine trees, wooded ground and a bluff above the Alabama River. Compared with the water-dominated Judge, the Legislator has a more traditional woodland character, although elevation changes and a stretch through native cypress swamp keep the routing varied. The current official black-tee scorecard lists 7,454 yards at par 72. The course’s broad fairways can invite an aggressive line, but the preferred approach often depends on choosing the correct side of the pine corridors before the course turns back toward the clubhouse.
History: Capitol Hill opened in 1999 as a 54-hole site on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail, with the Legislator, Senator and Judge courses sharing the Prattville property. The Legislator remained the more traditional of the three in its relationship with pine trees and the river bluff. The Retirement Systems of Alabama created the Trail as a statewide public-golf and economic-development project, and Capitol Hill became one of its central destinations north of Montgomery. The current scorecard and course presentation preserve the three-course identity while continuing to update playing surfaces and maintenance standards.
Did You Know? The Legislator’s routing includes a ride down the Sky Bridge for six holes laid out in a native cypress swamp. That short change of landscape is one reason the course feels larger and more varied than a single woodland corridor.
