Overview: At Royal Portrush - Valley Course, the links profile for Royal Portrush - Valley Course is listed at 6336 yards and par 70. It occupies lower-lying ground within the same dramatic Causeway Coast setting, with firm running turf, dunes, wind and a mixture of open and more sheltered holes. The routing is less about one monumental view than about the changing texture of the land: fairways turn through sandy ground, greens sit in natural folds and the coastal air keeps distance control relevant. It is a complete course in its own right, with a different rhythm and scale from the championship links beside it.
History: Royal Portrush dates to 1888, and the club’s courses developed as the resort and the town expanded. Harry Colt’s work in the late 1920s and early 1930s is associated with the Valley layout and helped give it a more coherent strategic identity. Later architectural work, including improvements associated with Martin Ebert, has refined the course while keeping its links character. The Valley should not be treated as a shortened version of the Dunluce: it is the club’s second full routing and has its own history, topography and test of shot-making.
Did You Know? The Valley Course shares the same spectacular north-coast environment as the Dunluce, but its lower ground creates a noticeably different visual experience. The two layouts can therefore show how one site supports two distinct expressions of links golf.
