Overview: Royal Port Alfred is a coastal links-style course where dunes, pockets of forest and the wind off the Indian Ocean shape the round. The 18-hole layout measures about 5,739 metres at par 72, making it a manageable length on paper but a very different proposition when the breeze changes direction. Natural vegetation and open sightlines give the course the feeling of a walk through the Eastern Cape coast rather than a heavily engineered resort.
History: The club’s identity has grown out of Port Alfred’s long relationship with the Kowie River and the surrounding coastal landscape. Rather than relying on a single famous redesign story, the course is best understood through the way it preserves a traditional seaside character: firm running ground, exposed approaches and holes that use the existing dunes as natural shaping.
Did You Know? The 12th is known as Greenmantle. Local course history records that the Prince of Wales attempted to drive the green in 1925, a story that captures the hole’s combination of elevation, coastal exposure and theatrical target more vividly than a yardage figure alone.
