Overview: Royal Perth Golf Club sits on a compact reserve of about 30 hectares beside the Swan River in South Perth, across the water from the city centre. Not long by modern standards, the course plays to a par of 72 and defends itself with tight, tree-lined fairways, around eighty bunkers, small, quick greens and the afternoon breeze off the river. Beside the Swan, the course combines an urban setting and glimpses of the city across the water with tree-lined playing corridors. Bunkers and mature trees create a more enclosed challenge than the riverside position might suggest.
History: The club was formed in August 1895 when twelve enthusiasts met in the Government House ballroom, and it first played on a rough nine holes on Burswood Island. It moved to Wattle Grove Farm in Belmont in 1900 and to South Perth in 1908. The present layout largely took shape around 1929, and King George VI granted the Royal title in 1937.
Did You Know? Royal Perth is the oldest golf club in metropolitan Western Australia, and its 1895 meeting is regarded as the starting point of organised golf in the state.
