Overview: Royal Montreal’s Red Course is an 18-hole parkland routing on the club’s Île-Bizard property. Dick Wilson designed the course alongside the Blue layout, and the current club lists 6,819 yards from the gold tees. Tree-lined fairways, strategic doglegs and small protected greens make the Red a positional course, with finesse required even when the hole does not appear long. It is a separate routing from the Blue Course and the nine-hole Dixie Course, all of which share Royal Montreal’s 600-acre setting.
History: The club began in Montréal in 1873 and moved to its present Île-Bizard home in 1959, when the new Blue and Red courses and clubhouse opened. Royal Montreal’s history includes ten Canadian Opens and Presidents Cup golf, but the Red’s identity is less about a single tournament setup than about Wilson’s parkland design. The current club presents both 18-hole courses as walkable layouts with distinct personalities.
Did You Know? The Red Course’s two memorable par fours, the 432-yard third and 448-yard ninth from the club’s published description, arrive before the rest of the round has fully opened up. They show the course’s preference for demanding approach angles and protected greens. The Red also shares its opening ground beside the clubhouse with the Blue, making the two courses visually related but strategically different.
