Overview: Royal Liverpool, or Hoylake, is an 18-hole links course on the Wirral Peninsula. Its comparatively open ground, changing wind and internal angles make it a strategic Open venue, while the course's position beside the former Hoylake racecourse gives the flat landscape a distinctive historical texture.
History: The club formed in 1869, when Robert Chambers and George Morris laid out the original nine holes; the course was extended to 18 holes two years later. The club received its Royal designation in 1871. Royal Liverpool has since hosted the first Amateur Championship, the first England-Scotland international match, thirteen Opens and the 2019 Walker Cup.
Did You Know? The first seven years of golf at Hoylake shared the land with horse racing. The course history still records that link in the names of the first and eighteenth holes, Course and Stand, and in the saddling bell preserved in the clubhouse.
