Overview: In Perth’s Fremantle suburb, the current round covers 18 holes at par 72 in the Perth suburb of Fremantle. The present layout measures about 6,175 metres and combines tree-lined fairways, compact greens and the sandy, breezy character of the western coastal plain. It is a traditional members’ course rather than a resort property, with a long-established clubhouse and a routing that rewards accuracy more than brute force. Its location makes it one of the most historically important golf stops in the Perth area.
History: The club was established in 1905. Arthur Oliphant and Peter Anderson were involved in the original design, the first nine were developed before the 18-hole course opened in 1909, and the club received the Royal prefix in 1930. A three-hole redesign in 1968 altered part of the property, but the course’s identity remains rooted in its early Fremantle history and the long evolution of a club that has stayed at the same general location.
Did You Know? Royal Fremantle is older than the city’s modern golf-tourism image. Its first course belonged to an era when clubs were being established around Perth’s expanding suburbs, and the Royal title arrived decades before the current language of championship destinations and golf travel.
