Overview: Royal Durban is one of golf’s most unusual urban settings: an 18-hole course inside the Greyville Racecourse precinct, close to the centre of Durban. The fairways sit on relatively open coastal ground, with the racecourse, city skyline and surrounding development forming part of the visual frame. The result is a strategic parkland round that feels unmistakably tied to Durban rather than designed as a secluded resort.
History: Durban Golf Club was established in 1892 and originally played within the Greyville racecourse area. Bob Grimsdell rebuilt and laid out the modern course in 1932, the same year the club received its Royal prefix. Its long competition record includes the South African Open, Players Championship, South African Amateur and Nelson Mandela Trophy, giving the course a place in the country’s tournament history.
Did You Know? The racecourse is not just a nearby landmark: it is the course’s setting. Golfers share the broader Greyville landscape with one of South Africa’s historic horse-racing venues, an arrangement that makes Royal Durban unlike almost any conventional parkland club.
