Overview: Royal Canberra’s Westbourne Course occupies the Westbourne Woods setting in Yarralumla, where an 18-hole par-72 routing is threaded through a remarkable collection of mature and exotic trees. The club’s course tour credits Commander John Harris with the 1962 design and OCM with the 2016 work. The result is parkland golf that gains much of its character from the arboretum: corridors open and close around the trees, fairways move across natural ground, and the approach to each green asks the player to read both angle and lie.
History: The club’s story began with a nine-hole course in 1913, followed by a nine-hole layout at Acton in 1922 and a larger Acton course in 1926. Royal status arrived in 1933. The planned flooding of the Molonglo River valley for Lake Burley Griffin forced the club to leave Acton, and in 1962 it moved to Westbourne Woods, the home of the present Westbourne course. The move also began a distinctive partnership between golf and the planted landscape, with the modern course designed to sit within the arboretum rather than erase it.
Did You Know? Royal Canberra is custodian of the Westbourne Woods Arboretum. The club’s history explains that a golf course was proposed there in 1945 partly because its irrigation and maintenance could help sustain the important tree collection. That unusual origin gives Westbourne a botanical dimension rarely found in a ranked inland course.
