Overview: Royal Calcutta Golf Club is an 18-hole parkland course in Tollygunge, Kolkata, and one of the landmark golf venues of the Indian subcontinent. The club's course material presents a substantial par-72 layout, with the researched blue-tee figure at 7,237 yards. Its mostly level setting is shaped by mature vegetation, broad playing corridors and natural water hazards, giving the round a classic inland-club character rather than a resort look. The club welcomes the history that surrounds it, but the course remains a serious tournament venue as well as a destination for golfers visiting Kolkata.
History: The club traces its origins to 1829, when it began as the Calcutta Golf Club and played over nine holes at Dum Dum. After earlier Maidan courses, work on the present Tollygunge site began in 1907; the initial nine-hole phase at the new premises dates to November 1910, and the fully operational 18-hole course opened on 22 December 1912. J. A. Tassie and J. A. Anderson designed that course. After part of the wider estate was sold, Peter Thomson redesigned the course, and the club identifies that work as the basis for the layout seen today. The distinction between the 1829 club foundation and the 1912 present routing matters when reading the course's history.
Did You Know? Royal Calcutta's early story includes several different nine-hole layouts before the current 18-hole home was completed. The club was also granted the title “Royal” in 1912 in connection with the visit of King George V and Queen Mary. That combination of an old club lineage, a long Tollygunge history and a later Thomson redesign helps explain why RCGC feels both historic and distinctly modern in its present form.
