Overview: Rowany Golf Club sits above Port Erin in the south-west of the Isle of Man. After a gentle opening pair, the course rises into undulating ground lined with gorse and bracken, with sloping greens and some blind shots. It measures about 5,770 yards to a par of 70, and the uphill par-five 5th and the tight 12th are often named as the toughest holes. The climb across the hillside creates a change in character between lower, more sheltered holes and higher ground. From there, the coastline and Manx landscape open out, while firm turf encourages a running approach when the wind is behind.
History: The first course at Castletown dates to 1895, when George Lowe laid out nine holes. W. J. Leaver later extended and redesigned the route between 1905 and 1910. The current eighteen winds over heathland terrain, with the combination of firm ground and elevation reflecting that early expansion.
Did You Know? Walking up to the crest of the 18th reveals Port Erin Bay and the Irish Sea, and on clear days the Mountains of Mourne in Northern Ireland are visible on the horizon.
