Overview: St Patrick's Links occupies a vast stretch of duneland beside Sheephaven Bay in County Donegal. Tom Doak's routing moves through towering ridges, open sandy ground and natural hollows, using the scale of the landscape to create both width and uncertainty. Fairways can appear generous from the tee, yet the direction of the wind and the shape of the ground make the best line into the large, undulating greens a changing question. The course has the spaciousness of an old Irish links while remaining a distinctly modern design.
History: St Patrick's Links opened in June 2021 after Tom Doak and his design team reworked land that had previously contained two 18-hole courses. The project did not try to cover the dunes with a heavy layer of artificial detail. Instead, the routing was rebuilt around the existing sand ridges and natural corridors, preserving the property's sense of scale and creating a new course that sits comfortably alongside Rosapenna's older Old Tom Morris and Sandy Hills links.
Did You Know? Rosapenna is home to three very different links experiences on one coastal property. St Patrick's was created by Tom Doak, the Old Tom Morris Links carries the name of the nineteenth-century designer, and Sandy Hills is associated with Pat Ruddy. The contrast makes the resort a compact study in how generations of architects can interpret the same Donegal dunes in very different ways.
