Overview: Rockaway Hunting Club is a private Lawrence course on the Jamaica Bay and Reynolds Channel side of Long Island. Its parkland routing reflects more than a century of changes by John Reid, Tom Bendelow, Devereux Emmet, A.W. Tillinghast, Perry Maxwell and later restoration work.
History: The club dates to 1878 and originally combined golf with hunting, polo and other field sports. The present 18-hole course is the result of successive design layers, including Emmet's work in the late 1910s, Tillinghast's influence and a 2009 restoration led by Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner.
Did You Know? Several holes use land that was once part of the club's steeplechase and racecourse history. The course is therefore a record of changing sports on the same coastal property rather than a layout created in one construction phase.
