Overview: Rock Creek Cattle Company, situated in the rugged landscape of Deer Lodge, Montana, is a spectacular private golf course designed by minimalist master Tom Doak. Set within a massive 30,000-acre working cattle ranch, the course offers a dramatic and expansively scaled golfing experience characterized by massive elevation changes, wild native grasses, and panoramic views of the Flint Creek Range. Doak's design is heavily integrated into the natural contours of the high-altitude terrain, presenting wide fairways that are deceptively strategic due to the undulating lies and firm, fast turf conditions.
History: Opened in 2008, the course was envisioned as a premium, low-density golf sanctuary that would honor the ranch's historical character. Doak and his construction crew, known as the Renaissance Golf team, worked diligently to move as little dirt as possible, allowing the natural rock outcroppings, native creeks, and rugged mountain ridges to dictate the course's hazards. The result is a course that feels as if it has always been part of the Montana wilderness.
Did You Know? The property is so vast and naturally integrated that actual cattle still graze on portions of the ranch, and golfers regularly share the stunning landscape with local elk, deer, and antelope. The signature par-5 10th hole runs directly alongside the rushing waters of Rock Creek, demanding a precise tee shot and a thoughtful approach to a green nestled amongst natural boulders.
