Overview: Rochester Golf & Country Club is a private southern Minnesota course built on sweeping terrain that gives its A.W. Tillinghast heritage room to breathe. The layout uses rolling ground, purposeful bunker placement and green contours to create variety without relying on extreme length. Its character is that of a walkable classic: lines from the tee matter, approaches are shaped by the land, and recovery shots are made more difficult when the ball finishes on the wrong side of a subtle slope. A substantial modern restoration has refreshed the course while keeping its historic architectural language visible.
History: Golfers formed the present Rochester Golf & Country Club around land leased from Mayo Clinic physicians in 1915, first playing a smaller layout associated with Red Wing professional Harry Turple. A.W. Tillinghast then supplied plans for the larger course, and the 18-hole routing was completed in the late 1920s. The club worked with Tom Doak and the Renaissance Golf team on a comprehensive restoration from 2017 through 2018, including greens, bunkers, drainage and tree work. The course reopened for play in 2019 with its Tillinghast character more clearly expressed.
Did You Know? The restoration removed more than 3,000 trees while rebuilding the drainage and returning putting surfaces and bunkers toward their historic shapes. That scale of work shows that the project was a course restoration in the architectural sense, not merely a conditioning upgrade.
