Overview: Riverwood Golf Course is a public 18-hole parkland course in Bismarck, laid out on the Missouri River flood plain. Leo Johnson's design uses wide, tree-lined fairways, mature hardwoods, wildlife and the river landscape to create a traditional municipal course with a full championship length. The black tees measure 7,066 yards at par 72, while several additional tee combinations make the course more practical for different playing abilities. The ground is mostly open and walkable, but the trees and river-side setting shape the sight lines and reward accurate placement.
History: Riverwood was dedicated on June 21, 1969 as a major public golf facility for Bismarck. Its location on the Missouri River flood plain has always been central to the course's identity, bringing both fertile vegetation and the need to manage changing water conditions. The layout has matured into a respected public championship venue, with practice areas, a clubhouse and a range of tee positions supporting regular local play as well as larger events. Its later recognition by Golfweek reflects the quality of a city-owned course that has remained closely tied to its natural setting.
Did You Know? The course is not only a summer golf facility. Bismarck Parks and Recreation also presents Riverwood as a winter recreation site, with cross-country skiing, kicksledding and snowshoeing when the golf season has ended.
