Overview: At the foot of Marbella, Rio Real Golf & Hotel presents an established tree-lined test between the foothills and the Mediterranean. Javier Arana designed a gently rolling routing where the Rio Real accompanies the holes and becomes a recurring strategic reference. Mature palms, olives, casuarinas and cypresses frame the fairways, giving the course a settled character despite its proximity to the coast. The terrain is mostly comfortable to walk, but the river crossings, angled greens and changing tree lines ask players to think about position. Rio Real's appeal is its balance: the setting feels distinctly Andalusian, while the architecture remains subtle enough to let the land and vegetation do much of the visual work.
History: The course was inaugurated in 1965 and is one of Javier Arana's important Costa del Sol designs. From the beginning, its concept was to use the Rio Real and the existing landscape as part of the course rather than build a heavily engineered resort setting. The club has hosted professional and national golf events and has retained its reputation as a mature, playable test. Decades of growth have strengthened the tree-lined character that now defines the round.
Did You Know? The Rio Real is crossed four times during the round, so the river is more than a scenic boundary. It changes the visual relationship between holes and creates several moments when the player must decide how much of the natural corridor to use. The palms and mature trees then carry that river landscape toward the clubhouse and the coast.
