Overview: Red Wing Golf Club is a public historic course in the center of Red Wing, where an early twentieth-century layout occupies the city's bluff-and-pasture landscape. The course is associated with C.E. Betcher, who helped turn local interest in golf into a permanent club and course. Its parkland character is modest and community-oriented rather than resort theatrical, with mature trees, changing ground and a long relationship with the surrounding city. The course's significance comes from continuity: golf has remained on this property through more than a century of local history.
History: Red Wing golfers began organizing around pastureland in 1912, and C.E. Betcher designed a nine-hole course whose construction used horses, scrapers and hand labor. A full season of golf was played in 1915, the year the club was incorporated, and the clubhouse followed in 1916. The course later developed into the 18-hole layout associated with the club today. Its history reflects the growth of Minnesota golf from rough pasture courses into established community institutions while retaining the original relationship with the Red Wing landscape.
Did You Know? Early Red Wing golfers used bentgrass seed obtained from Minikahda, while Dr. J.A. Haustein researched cold-weather turf and later shared improved seed back with Minneapolis. The exchange links two historic Minnesota clubs through the practical science of keeping northern greens alive.
