Overview: Red Hawk Ridge is a public Jim Engh course in Castle Rock, Colorado, where scrub oak, native grasses, exposed rock and pronounced elevation changes shape the round. The 18-hole layout measures 7,015 yards and plays to par 72, using rolling foothill terrain rather than a flat suburban grid. Fairways can look generous from the tee, but mounding, strategically placed bunkers, greenside lakes and uneven lies make the approach game central to scoring. The course’s strongest feature is the way it keeps the native landscape visible: tree lines do not simply frame every hole, and the changes in elevation create different windows toward the Front Range and the surrounding open country. Five tee sets allow the course to retain its character while offering a more manageable line for different levels of play.
History: Red Hawk Ridge opened in 1999 after the Town of Castle Rock selected Jim Engh to develop a course on the rugged Front Range property. Engh’s routing responded to the site’s topography, native stands of scrub oak and the town’s goal of creating a high-quality public course. The result became the centrepiece of a wider golf operation, with the course, practice facilities and clubhouse serving local players as well as golfers travelling through the Denver region. Its history is closely tied to Castle Rock’s growth, but the course has kept its separate identity by leaving the rougher landforms and native areas visible rather than smoothing the property into a conventional residential layout.
Did You Know? Red Hawk Ridge’s official description lists abundant wildlife alongside the elevation changes and views as part of the course experience. The course also uses bentgrass tees and bluegrass fairways, a combination suited to the transition between maintained playing corridors and native Front Range ground.
