Overview: The lower routing at Puerta de Hierro is a long private Madrid course with large contoured greens, white-sand bunker complexes, and mature tree lines. Its 18-hole design is distinct from the historic Arriba course and has its own renovation history.
History: Abajo belongs to the club's later golf development, associated with Robert Trent Jones Jr. and John Harris and a major late-1990s renovation mainly carried out by Kyle Phillips. The club dates to 1895, but that older date describes the institution, not this lower course.
Did You Know? Abajo contains selected holes from earlier Colt, Simpson, and Harris work within a later strategic renovation. That layered history explains why its green complexes feel modern while the course remains part of Madrid's oldest golf institution.
