Overview: Real Golf Club de San Sebastián is the Jaizubia course of a historic club based in Hondarribia, near the Bay of Txingudi and the foothills of Mount Jaizkibel. The present 18-hole course sits among mature oaks, ash, hazel, maple and alder, giving it a distinctly northern woodland character. It is not a coastal links, even though the bay and the surrounding hills provide broad views. The routing relies on tree corridors, changing ground and a mixture of open and enclosed holes, rewarding players who can shape a round around the landscape rather than force one style of play. The atmosphere is quiet, green and strongly connected to Basque golf history.
History: The club was founded in 1910 at Lasarte and is one of the pioneers of golf in the Basque Country. The course now associated with the club at Jaizubia was inaugurated in 1968, replacing the earlier facilities. Federation and Basque golf sources identify Pedro Irigoyen, also rendered as Hirigoyen, with the current course. The club's long institutional history includes founding involvement in the Spanish golf federation, while the Jaizubia course created the modern setting in which that history continues.
Did You Know? The club is both older and younger than the date on the current course card. Its foundation goes back to 1910, but the Jaizubia course dates from 1968. That distinction explains why historical descriptions call it one of the pioneers of Spanish golf while the present routing is a later course in Hondarribia's wooded landscape.
