Overview: Real Club de Golf Sotogrande sits close to the Mediterranean in Cádiz, where Robert Trent Jones Sr. combined generous corridors with a dense planting of cork oaks, pines and eucalyptus. Large lakes and elevated greens create the main strategic questions, but the course is rarely about brute force alone. The best line is often the one that keeps the next approach open, especially when the coastal wind changes the value of a safe side of the fairway.
History: Inaugurated in 1964, Sotogrande was Robert Trent Jones Sr.’s first European design and the first golf course built in the new Sotogrande development. Its original strategic character has been protected through a major restoration led by Roger Rulewich and David Fleury, with the club identifying 2016 as the key restoration date. The course has also been a long-running Spanish tournament venue, including the International Copa de Jerez, which has been associated with Sotogrande since 1969.
Did You Know? The course’s planting is not just decorative. Cork oak, pine and eucalyptus frame different angles into the greens, while the lakes change the value of aggressive lines from hole to hole. That combination gives Sotogrande a distinctly Mediterranean identity, even though its architectural language comes from the strategic school of Robert Trent Jones.
