Overview: Raven Golf Club at Snowshoe Resort is a Gary Player mountain design set high in the Allegheny Mountains of West Virginia. The 7,045-yard, par-72 course uses steep slopes, wooded corridors and long changes of elevation to create a round that is as much about managing the land as shaping shots. Holes are separated by forest rather than running in parallel, which gives the course a quiet, individual rhythm. The setting is rugged, but the routing remains readable when players choose positions that respect the mountain.
History: The course originally carried the name Hawthorne Valley and opened in 1993. Gary Player designed the layout to use Snowshoe’s natural mountain terrain, with the resort adding golf as a summer counterpart to its winter identity. The Raven later became part of the Snowshoe golf offering, retaining the original design’s relationship to the Allegheny landscape and its unusual changes in elevation.
Did You Know? Some of the course’s starting platforms stand more than 200 ft above the greens below. That vertical separation is not just scenery: it changes how players judge carries, wind and landing space, and it is one reason the Raven is so different from a conventional parkland course.
