Overview: RACV Cape Schanck Resort Golf Course occupies the southern end of Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula, where elevated tees open across Bass Strait and Western Port Bay. Robert Trent Jones Jr. shaped an 18-hole, par-70 coastal course around the rugged Cape Schanck setting. Its design language is clear in the elevated greens, substantial bunkers and tree-lined fairways, but the peninsula weather adds a second layer: wind and changing light can alter the apparent width of a landing area and the safe side of an approach. The course balances resort polish with a distinctly exposed Australian landscape.
History: Golf at Cape Schanck is part of the wider development of a public course and the private National courses on the peninsula. The National’s historical record places completion of the Cape Schanck public course in 1986 and records an exhibition match featuring Greg Norman and Bob Shearer at that milestone. RACV later established the resort operation around the course, and the layout became a regular championship venue, including the 2018 Victorian PGA Championship. The current course remains tied to Jones’s original coastal concept while serving a modern resort setting.
Did You Know? The official RACV description highlights the course’s elevated tee positions, ocean views, bunkering and tree-lined fairways in the same breath. That mix is why Cape Schanck does not play like a featureless seaside links: several holes ask for a controlled line through trees before the landscape opens toward the water.
