Overview: Quixote Club in Sumter, South Carolina, is a modern masterpiece that has gained national acclaim for its design and mission. A complete transformation of the historic Sunset Country Club, the course is built on a rare pocket of sandy soil, allowing for firm, fast playing conditions. It features a rustic, "old-school" aesthetic with sprawling sandy waste areas, jagged-edge bunkering, and a layout that rewards creativity and ground-game strategy.
History: Opened in 2020, Quixote Club was designed by Kris Spence in collaboration with Jack Nicklaus II. The project was driven by a unique philanthropic mission, with membership proceeds directly supporting the Liberty STEAM Charter School in Sumter. The design pays homage to the Golden Age of architecture while utilizing the site's natural sand to create a playing experience more common in the Sandhills of North Carolina than the South Carolina Midlands.
Did You Know? The course's name and mission are inspired by the literary figure Don Quixote, reflecting the club's "impossible dream" of transforming the local community through education and world-class golf.
