Overview: Quinta do Lago's South Course is an 18-hole parkland layout in the Algarve, framed by umbrella pines, lakes and the Ria Formosa landscape. William Mitchell's routing moves between wooded holes and more open water-influenced ground, rewarding accurate positioning without turning the round into a purely target-driven test. The natural setting remains one of the course's defining features.
History: The South Course opened to the public in 1974 as part of William F. Mitchell's original 27-hole development at Quinta do Lago. The resort's official history identifies today's South Course and nine holes of the North Course as descendants of that initial layout. The South Course has hosted the Portuguese Open eight times, including the first event in 1976.
Did You Know? The original 27-hole plan was built into Quinta do Lago's wider resort vision, rather than added after the property was established. That is why the South Course, the North Course and the surrounding landscape still read as parts of one connected design history.
