Overview: Quinta do Lago North is a mature parkland course in the Ria Formosa area, where umbrella pines, sandy soil, lakes, and broad corridors give the round its character. The original routing is associated with William Mitchell, while the current course reflects substantial work by Beau Welling with Paul McGinley. Its par-72 layout moves between wooded passages and open ground. Sand, water, and gentle movement reward a player who chooses angles carefully instead of simply chasing distance.
History: The North course opened in 1974 as part of Quinta do Lago’s original development. A major redesign in 2014 renewed greens, tees, bunkers, irrigation, and playing surfaces while retaining the course’s identity within the estate. Quinta do Lago’s history also records the Portuguese Open there in 1976 and repeated returns over the following decades. The result is an older routing with a documented modern chapter.
Did You Know? Water has a particularly visible role on the North course, with lakes at the thirteenth and eighteenth providing clear strategic punctuation. The redesign also introduced water-recycling and renewable-energy measures to the wider operation. That pairing of Ria Formosa scenery and modern resource management is part of understanding the course beyond its polished resort appearance.
