Quinta da Ria Golf

Overview: Quinta da Ria is an 18-hole parkland course on Portugal's eastern Algarve coast, beside the Ria Formosa landscape at Vila Nova de Cacela. Rocky Roquemore designed the par 72 course, listed at 6,620 yards, around a setting of olive, cork and carob trees, coastal lagoons and wide views towards the Atlantic. The course is not a conventional resort parkland lined with villas. Its strategy comes from the interaction of broad fairways, wind moving in from the coast and water hazards that become more influential as the round progresses. The natural reserve setting gives the course a distinctive ecological atmosphere, while the mature trees provide shape and definition to the holes. Quinta da Ria rewards a golfer who can vary the game between controlled approaches, careful positioning and the occasional decision to use the wind rather than fight it.

History: Quinta da Ria opened in 2002 as a Rocky Roquemore design and became part of the golf landscape of the eastern Algarve. Portuguese Golf Federation data identifies the course as an 18-hole Rocky Roquemore layout with par 72 and records its relationship with the Ria Formosa setting. The course was planned as a parkland counterpart to the region's coastal golf, using existing trees and the natural environment rather than a dense residential development. It is also part of a wider golf destination that includes Quinta de Cima, but the two courses are separate routings. Quinta da Ria's identity remains tied to the lagoon landscape, the mature trees and the changing influence of Atlantic weather.

Did You Know? Quinta da Ria sits within the visual reach of the Ria Formosa lagoons, so the course combines inland-looking parkland holes with a distinctly coastal horizon. The contrast between mature trees and open water is one of the clearest signatures of the layout.
