Overview: At Cascais, Onyria Quinta da Marinha Golf offers an 18-hole parkland routing to par 71 in Cascais, between the Atlantic coast and Sintra hills. Robert Trent Jones Sr. shaped the routing through mature pines with elevated tees, water hazards, bunkers, and greens rewarding a thoughtful approach. The coastal setting gives it atmosphere, but trees and elevation keep the round from playing like a flat seaside layout. It is a balanced test whose identity depends on rhythm and placement.
History: The course opened in 1984 and has been refined through changes to its routing over time. Quinta da Marinha’s course material continues to credit Jones Sr. while noting that the layout has evolved across several decades. That combination of original authorship and later adjustment is important when reading the course today. It remains recognizably Jones in broad strategic structure, but not frozen in its opening-year form.
Did You Know? The thirteenth runs downhill toward the sea and clearly shows how the course uses Cascais’s coastal topography. The tenth brings water into the strategy from another angle, so the round alternates between long views and contained target problems. The Atlantic is present in the architecture even when the sea is not visible from every hole.
