Overview: Queenstown Golf Club occupies the Kelvin Heights peninsula, where Lake Wakatipu and the Remarkables create an unusually dramatic frame for an 18-hole round. The course is listed at par 72 and 6,103 metres from the back tees. Its appeal is not only the scenery: the peninsula setting gives the holes changing exposures, water views and a clear relationship between the land and the surrounding mountains. It is a memorable example of a destination course that still functions as a proper club layout.
History: The current course opened in 1975 and was designed by Hylton Hensman and John Grant. Since then, Queenstown’s growth has turned the Kelvin Heights peninsula into one of New Zealand’s best-known golf settings, but the layout remains rooted in its original relationship with Lake Wakatipu. The course has evolved as a local club while becoming an important part of the region’s international golf identity.
Did You Know? The fifth hole is the course’s signature: a par four that cuts across Lake Wakatipu. It captures the particular character of Queenstown Golf Club in one shot, combining a demanding line with the kind of mountain-and-water backdrop that makes the hole recognisable even in photographs.
