Overview: The Quarry at Giant's Ridge in Biwabik turns a former sand, gravel, and iron ore site into a bold northern Minnesota course. Jeff Brauer's 18-hole design uses the excavated ground, wooded edges, exposed rock, and changes in elevation to give the course a character that is distinct from ordinary resort parkland. The par-72 routing measures 7,201 yards from the back tees, but its identity comes from how the land shapes lines of play and changes the look of the approaches. It is a course where geology is part of the architecture.
History: The Quarry opened for play in 2003 as the second championship course at Giant's Ridge, following The Legend. State and regional planning records describe Brauer's design as part of the resort's effort to create a summer destination alongside its established winter sports business. The two courses helped turn the property into a year-round golf and recreation destination in the Iron Range.
Did You Know? The course occupies ground with a working industrial past rather than an untouched golf landscape. Sand, gravel, and iron ore extraction shaped the site before the golf project, so the exposed rock and altered landforms are not decorative additions. They are remnants of the terrain's earlier use, incorporated into the playing experience.
